From March 3rd to March 4th, 2015, two groups of students ( total of 6 )participated in the World Scholars Cup, representing KIS Jeju at NLCS. Both of the teams won the ticket to Malaysia for the global round by coming up with 1st and 4th place.

The World Scholars Cup is an international team academic tournament with students participating all over from over 40 countries. The event was founded by the alumni of the Yale University, and this year is the 10th year holding the event. Students here in KIS were privileged to live here in Jeju since the competition was hosted at NLCS Jeju this year.

Two groups of academically passionate students participated in the event and dominated the scene throughout two days of competition. By the end of the day, thetrophies numbered 7 where the glory and pride numbered uncountable.

Students including myself who participated in the event were more than pleased and honored to not only be part of the event for the first time but also to be invited to the Global Round in coming June as ‘qualifying teams’.

“I left feeling smarter, and I can’t wait for another World Scholar’s Cup in Malaysia.” Lucy J., one of the 6 students who attended the event undoubtedly felt very proud on herself as if something very valuable impacted her strongly.

This competition was Lucy and her team’s first time attending. Trust to be told, at the beginning, they had no idea how the competition would turn out, lost and confused. Nevertheless, all of her team members actively enjoyed the event, finding themselves enjoying new experience.

Students were required to study materials provided prior to the event since the whole competition centers around specific topics and subjects. This was when Lucy and her teammates found themselves lacking. She stated, “In general, we didn’t have much problem except the fact that we didn’t spend enough time to prepare for this event.”

After the competition, while they were satisfied with their achievementshowever, they found a room for improvements. Speaking of, Lucy also stated, “We found places where we needed to work on more, therefore, for the next event, I think out team need to explore the subjects even more and practice debating."

Overall, Lucy believed that it was a weekend the got her passion out and got her brain working. She can’t wait to visit Malaysia for the global round. Hope them a safe trip along with good results.
