The GIN (Global Issues Network) club of KIS Jeju has been working on a project that will allow the students at KIS Jeju to learn more about the eminent 4.3 Incident that took place in Jeju in the late 1940’s. 4.3 Incident is a historical event that had a significant influence on Jeju, for many innocent citizens had been sacrificed. Last week, during the service leading week, GIN displayed a movie called “Jiseul” in the High School auditorium. The movie is an independent film that portrays the 4.3 Incident in the perspective of the native Jeju inhabitants that had to suffer during the incident.
Film Jiseul’s background is set in winter of 1948. Jeju natives hear rumors about the mainland’s government acknowledging every residents within 5 km of coastline as a mob of riots. The inhabitants all evacuate, heading towards the mountains, not knowing what is happening to those who are caught by the military men, nor why they should abandon their homes to escape. These people, not knowing that most of them would never be able to return to their homes again, stay optimistic until the very end, and worry about the things that they left behind.
To raise awareness of this tragic incident and give students a chance to learn more about the history of Jeju, GIN invited Mr. Yang, one of the actors of the film “Jiseul,” to give a lecture in the High School auditorium on Friday, April 3rd from 3:45 pm to 4:45 pm. The actor played the role of one of the protagonist in the movie, and is in fact a Jeju native himself. Mr. Yang will be talking about what 4.3 Incident means to the Jeju natives, what we could learn from this tragedy, and what we can do as to contribute to Jeju’s making progress. GIN believes that as parta of the current Jeju community, KIS students and staff members should come to the seminar and listen to the lecture.
