One distinct aspect of international school compared to Korean public school is a seasonal sports system: in international schools including KIS Jeju, there are a lot of sports that change seasonally and encourage students to participate as athletes. Some sports are varied according to each school, but almost every school provides common popular sports such as soccer, basketball, and swimming. In this year during season 2, one of the most famous sports among the girls was a basketball that over 20 girls had applied for it.
As the student who has annually participated the girls’ basketball team since KIS has been established, I have been a captain of the team for 3 years, and this season from 2014 to 2015 was especially valuable and meaningful to me. The title of “captain” itself implies a huge weight of responsibility. Compared to other schools, KIS only has the students until Juniors, and with new Freshmen girls, I who belong in the eldest groups could learn the leadership skills and cooperative abilities. Above all things, I just want to say "thank you" to all the girls of basketball team.
Last year, our girls had won third place in KISAC tournament that was held in Jeju Branksome Hall. When we received the plaque, all the girls promised for the improvement in next tournament and cheered for each other, and this year our team travelled to Songdo George Mason University for KISAC tournament. KISJ girls team was divided into two groups: KIS A and KIS B. KIS A was mainly consisted of Juniors while KIS B had 9th graders. When KIS A team was playing the game, KIS B cheered for us, and KIS A older girls were giving feedbacks and supporting younger girls. I was so impressed by the strong relationship and interaction within the girls. All the girls with different characteristics and styles of helping each other gathered around and spoke out for the same goal.
Eventually, KIS A team won second place in the tournament. I and Alice Koh from 10th grade got awards for “best players,” and other members were truly pleased as they were the receivers. Every moment of the practices and games would not be forgotten, every member of our team would never be excluded, and every coach would remain as our coach. Basketball season develops not only athletic skills but also harmonizing abilities with other girls who are even younger or older than myself. We have one more year that we can play as the basketball player, and as a captain I cannot wait to see all the original members with some more new younger girls.
