The strong wind in Jeju is one of the main and unique characteristics of Jeju. The wind promotes a tough nature that requires endurance for foreigners who have never experienced it. Mr. DeBaun has experienced such strong wind during grade 9 Adventure Day. The Adventure Day trip was held on the 13th of September, 2014, during ‘Curricular Saturday’. Students and teachers enjoyed the trip, yet encountered the strong wind that surged from the sea.
Since the founding of KIS, there has been an Adventure Day for every grade level. The purpose of the trip is to help new students get along with others in an intimate environment. This time the trip was solely for students and teachers to form strong bonds with each other.
As a 9th grade advisor, Mr. DeBaun was very satisfied with the event. He said that “[his] daughter would really like it too.” One thing he liked the most about the trip was the mountain, especially the “Oreum trail”. The mountain was gentle; he mentioned, “the Oreum wasn’t too difficult, and both my wife and 6 year-old daughter would also enjoy it.”
The location, where all the day’s events were close to each other, was an ideal place for advisors to lead their advisees. He said, “the place was compact so students could not get lost. It was a really good location.”
Overall, Mr.DeBaun was pleased with the beautiful scenery he saw during the trip. Most impressively, the stunning view of fishing villages and the sea mesmerized him. It was his first time to see the rural part of Jeju, especially fishing villages. He said, “the view of one of the little fishing villages was very neat and different to the other places like Jeju-Si or Seogwipo.”
“We showed up late which changed the schedule slightly from what we had planned.” In terms of schedule, Mr.DeBaun wanted some “tweaking” and “organizing” to run the trip smoother and faster. Also, in order to make it a more memorable trip, he suggested an idea that students cook their own outdoor camping food and share with each other.
We all know that every cloud has silver lining. Anywhere hardships exist, there may exist joy as well. On this trip, everybody enjoyed themselves despite the formidable wind. He described the wind as “daunting”, where the boat could not go any further, and pages kept blowing while students were doing some sketching activity. However, he stated, “It was so something that could be controlled.”
Overall, Mr.DeBaun enjoyed the trip; he showed a strong ‘yes’ on recommending the place for his friends, acquaintances, and even the current 8th graders to come visit.
The trip was undoubtedly successful in terms of time management and scheduling. Everyone made beautiful memories with the beautiful scenery of Jeju, and we developed strong bonds of companionship together.
