NLCS J's Exchange students ask, 'What's Up, UK?'

NLCS Jeju has a very special programme held every year; a few students in Year 9 are sent to their founding school, NLCS UK as an exchange. This year, six students were selected; Allie Lee, Sarah Son, Victor Kim, Yuna Jung, Nancy Kwon and Hannah Seo were given the chance to go and experience another country’s culture by staying with the British families for 3 weeks.

From 14th March to 5th April, each of them stayed with a student in NLCS London. They attended school for two weeks, and enjoyed the Easter break during their last week. It took them 12 hours by flight, and they were horribly jet-lagged when they arrived.

It had been a chance for them to meet new, global friends in NLCS London and to be the ambassadors of NLCS Jeju in NLCS UK. Also, as they stayed with their host’s families, they could try different dishes from various nationalities, and also be able to learn the cultural differences between South Korea and the United Kingdom. The host families were from India, Sri Lanka, China, and Britain, which added more diverse cultural experiences for the participants.

One of the most typical differences was food. As half of the host families were Indian, they got to try different Indian dishes, such as curry, ‘Mogo’(Spicy African cassava sticks), and Mango chutneys with English dishes, such as scrambled eggs, English muffins, ‘Fish and chips’, shepherd’s pie and baked beans. Also, the lifestyles were different yet the Korean students could soon get adjusted to their host families.

Meanwhile, six students from NLCS UK would also visit NLCS Jeju from 3rd to 20th June. They will also stay in South Korea for three weeks and for two of them, they would be able to visit NLCS Jeju and enjoy the NLCS Jeju’s own Arts Festival.
