The World Scholar’s cup, is a world scale competition that includes debates, collaborative writing, scholar’s challenge, and the scholar’s bowl. The Korea round for the World Scholar’s cup this year happened last week in NLCS Jeju, with the topic of “The World Unbound.” Six schools including the three international schools participated in this event, and ended the tournament with significant results.

The first event for the junior division was the debate. The students each had three rounds of debate, and it turned out be extremely competitive. The basic rules for debate were: the students were only allowed to speak for 4 minutes maximum and there was no chance for the students to rebut in the middle of the announcement and to ask a question.

The second event was the collaborative writing event. Students had 30 minutes to plan their writing. After 30 minutes, every electronic devices were put away and students could only use the notes they wrote. They had 45 minutes to finish their writing and another 15 minutes to look at the teammate’s writing, checking errors and fixing them.

Then the event called the scholar’s challenge followed. This event was challenging for many students. There were 120 questions and the students only had 60 minutes to answer. However, students were allowed to choose more than one answer, and if there was an answer among the chosen numbers, the students would get 1/n points, with “n” being the number of answers you chose.

The last event was the scholar’s bowl. In this event, the scholars used a clicker to choose their answers. There were lots of fun things going on during this event. Each and every student who participated in the World Scholar’s cup got a small alpaca doll. There were six main rounds, each question worthing different points, and a bonus round which were much harder. The points for the bonus round questions were relatively higher than the ones before.

There was also a talent show happening on the last day of the tournament. The little students were very brave to stand in front of the older students and to sing and dance. Some students even played the ukelele. After the talent show, there was a long ending ceremony with some awards given to the scholars. Everyone cheered for each person who got a medal or a trophy and congratulated them.

The World Scholar’s Cup was a great event. It provided students lots of useful information in various fields. It also gave students an idea of “teamwork.” Debates, collaborative writing, and the scholar’s bowl all required teamwork to happen. The only individual event was the scholar’s challenge, and even the point for these were added up team by team!

Top ten teams from the Junior Division and the top five teams from the senior division was invited to go to the global round, with some teams additionally invited. The global round will happen from this year’s June 21st to 27th in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Huge well done to everyone who participated in the World Scholar’s cup, and good luck to the people who will be participating in the global round!
