On the 7th of March, NLCS Jeju Year 11 and 12 drama students headed for Seoul, to see the performance of <Lionboy>, by Theatre de Complicite. The performance was staged in Haeoreum, the largest of the three National theatres in Seoul, and it was very different to the “theatre” that the students were used to. Theatre that most students were used to involved actors acting out their characters as truthfully as possible, but the actors of <Lionboy> started the show by introducing their real selves and emphasising the fact that they are only telling a “story”. Along with that remarkable breakthrough, Complicite managed to stage a breath-taking chase with a few furniture in a limited space, and created a believable lion using a shadow. The boat created with two ladders was indeed, the highlight of their creativity.
<Lionboy> is based on a fantasy novel by Zizou Corder, and features a boy named Charlie Ashanti who can speak cat language. His parents are kidnapped by the evil Corporacy, and now he must gather all the help he could get, which includes his cat friends, and fight back. It might seem childish, but with a touch of unique creativity, <Lionboy> was not childish at all. From the special and original techniques Complicite uses to tell this fantastic story, the students could understand the true meaning of creative story-telling.
