In this mixture of cultures from all four corners of the world, we get to enjoy different versions of similar holidays, and New Year is no exception. Not only did we celebrate the first of January, we were also able to return to our home for the Lunar New Year during last half term break. This year’s Lunar New Year, or the Lunar first of January, was Thursday the 19th of February. As the custom, we all enjoyed a super extended weekend of five days, from the day before until the Sunday. Even though our mothers had to endure hours of hard work in front of grills and pots, griddling Korean traditional pancakes “Jeon” and making Korean traditional thick beef soup with rice cakes “tteokguk,” and many of us had to tolerate hours and hours of car journey to our grandparents’ home, I’m sure we all enjoyed Seol Nal very much, especially those of us who were able to receive a lot of handsel, or Saebat-don.
