12th Spark - PULSE

‘Caring’ is one of the traits that not only IB but also others emphasize. In this regard, Students at Branksome Hall Asia lead various service project to understand and satisfy the needs of the vulnerable in Korea. Especially, G11 students have been proactive in building connection with other communities. Their efforts to bridge BHA and local communities have ushered in a sense of empathy and humanity to campus. PULSE is a newly established service club led by Semee Chun and Subin Yoon in G11. Semee and Subin decided to launch a project relating to their interests - natural science and human rights. PULSE aspires to alleviate migrant workers’ pain through assisting them in getting proper healthcare.

What is PULSE?

PULSE is a service project aiming to support migrant workers in Korea. We have 15 students involved in the project under the support of our supervisor and other faculty members. Our goal is to raise money for a medical center named Ansan St. Vincent's clinic. After contacting the medical personnel, We identified that the medical center lacks of cardiovascular medicine. Thus, we will contribute in purchasing the medicine.

Why did you decide to support migrant workers?

Healthcare system in Korea is far more advanced than other countries. I have been aware of this ever since I was a child and was very keen on studying the structure of it. However, I realized that migrant workers are largely ignored or excluded, which leads to a blind spot in the system.

What kind of initiatives did you carry out so far?

We had our first fundraiser in March, which was very successful in our opinion. We were able to reach 50% of our goal from just one fundraiser. We are planning to have another fundraiser at Colorful Jeju in April and give donation before the end of this year!

What makes PULSE distinctive from other CASE activities?

Firstly, PULSE sets different themes for each fundraiser. Secondly, We sell healthy food and beverages while guaranteeing their taste. Last but not least, I am very proud to say that despite having students from various grade levels, we have a friendly and active atmosphere in every meeting.

Semee and Subin described PULSE team as Superheroes. Indeed, PULSE’s initiatives deserve the title.
