<It’s Not Just a Competition, It’s A Place Where We Learn, Meet New Friends, and Receive Alpacas!

This past week on January 16th through 17th, the North London Collegiate School Jeju campus invited students from Branksome Hall Asia, Korean International School, and North London Collegiate School Jeju to compete against each other at the World Scholar’s Cup. During this competition, students debated, wrote essays and participated in quizzes about an imperfect world.

Explanation: Do you know what happy alpacas say? They say “Pwaa!” The World Scholar’s Cup starts with pwaa and ends with alpacas. The World Scholar’s Cup is not just an ordinary competition where students from different schools compete against each other; instead, it is an opportunity for students to become knowledgeable of subjects that are not necessarily related to school, meet new people, and receive alpacas.

As soon as the competitors arrived at the main auditorium of NLCS Jeju, the board members of World Scholar’s Cup started to sing, scream, and laugh. They sang songs throughout the whole competition and continually emphasized that students should enjoy being here and learning new information.

In order to follow the well known tradition of the World Scholar’s Cup, each school started the event by screaming “Pwaa” when the names of the schools were called. After screaming “Pwaa”, students started to write essays based on the topics that were given by the World Scholar’s Cup. After writing an essay for about an hour, we have completed 120 question quiz based on six different subjects, special area, science, history, literature, social studies, and arts and music, that we had to study beforehand. Later on in the afternoon, we have done three debate rounds based on the topics given from the World Scholar’s Cup team.

Throughout the day, the students who have participated in the World Scholar’s Cup were able to enjoy learning and meet new people from different schools within Jeju Island. In conclusion, many students from the three schools received accolades for their work at the World Scholar’s Cup on January 16th and 17th. Congratulations to all the winners and their schools.
