House Competition: Public Speaking

On the afternoon of the 9th of February, the grand opening of the 4th NLCS Jeju Public Speaking House Competition has been announced. All five houses had been looking forward, and preparing for this event from weeks before, and indeed, all the houses delivered thought-provoking speeches with great passion, energy and clarity.

The competition consisted of two parts; a senior competition, and a junior competition. The junior competition was held in the auditorium, and students from years 7 to 9 competed. The senior competition was held in the PAC (Performing Arts Centre), and students from years 10 or above competed.

Each speaking team, no matter the age group, had three speakers. That makes a total of 6 speakers per house (3 for junior, and 3 for senior). The Chairperson opens the speech, with a brief introduction that lasts 2 minutes. Then, the Main Speaker steps up and delivers the actual speech for 6 minutes. After the speech, the questioner asks a question to the Main Speaker, and the Chairperson rephrases the question and delivers it to the Main Speaker. The Main Speaker than answers the question. After this question and answer routine, the Vote of Thanks delivers his or her speech for two minutes, which serves as a conclusion.

Though everyone involved in the competition showed absolutely amazing ability and talent, the overall win went to Noro House. Their topics, Wikipedia for the juniors and Hanyeo for the seniors, were both passionate and thought-provoking enough to impress the judges of the junior and senior competitions. Both teams had claimed 2nd place in their own divisions, which added up to an overall win.
